Si Scott

Si Scott is a graphic designer illustrator who is the driving force behind the UK-based Si Scott studio.  His obsessively hand-drawn pen and ink illustrated typography, graphic design and illustrations pull from both modern and traditional influences.

His unique approach evolved through his love of drawing, type and design and the ability to bring all these elements together to create something beautiful. His view on graphic design today is that there is some nice stuff emerging, but a lot of bad stuff too; then again if everyone liked everything and had the same views; the world would be a very boring place.

Whilst working for design companies he still developed his personal work (out of hours of course!), constantly pushing himself to produce new and different designs for his portfolio. Even at college he held the ethos to “do your own thing and never emulate”, whilst most people were developing skills with the newly emerging computer technology, SS was to be found in the workshops experimenting with letterpress and screen-printing. So it is easy to understand that often the briefs set by his clients become the object of rebellion, going against the grain and including elements he’s not supposed to.

Chinatown

Picked up this newspaper in Chinatown this morning as part of my research for the concert posters I am developing. I love the bold graphics and colours they use to illustrate the text.

Beijing and beyond

some photographs of the albums from Kenya and Beijing

After entering retirement my grandparents took some well deserved time out to travel the world. One of the great benefits of this is being privy to my Granddads photographic endeavors. Some of the images are just fantastic; and all shot on 35mm SLR (I hate to think about the weight of his bag as he trekked up the Great Wall of China!!)

I have used s sample of his images as inspiration for colourways whilst developing poster designs for a self set brief.

But does it float

I came across this image looking for inspiration for a series of posters I am designing for music based performances. It wasn't the girl in the image that caught my eye, it was the shapes created by her movement.

Unique approach to design... that was my first thought when listening to Matt Pyke talk about his work. He brings together designers from all over the world to visualise concepts he came up with in his log cabin in Sheffield!! How can you not be impressed by that...

Experimental Jetset are a Dutch design group that are largely known for their work with print-based, typographical design. Their use of type is so slick, they have become a constant point of inspiration for me.

I love the distressed effect the printing ink gives to the text.

Just a tad gross...

The anti-theft lunch bag...
I know it's disgusting but it's just such a funny piece of design. The sandwich bags that make your lunch look mouldy... the ultimate deterrent.

Images from the bookbinding workshop.
This gave me ideas for possible formats my cookbook could take.

Reality Hack -Andrew Paul Brooks

Its amazing what you can find when you know where to look...

This exhibition showcased the photographic works of Andrew Paul Brooks. Featuring snapshots of a world that goes by unnoticed; the large format, gritty images were the result of following urban explorers as they discovered the hidden depths of Manchester. My favourite image of the exhibition was titled 'Court Yard' (top image) it showed a high angle shot of a courtyard in central Manchester, its appearance captured some eerie qualities that would not have been out of place in a Brother's Grimm tale.
The inspiring images displayed at the exhibition held at Urbis in manchester made me think about composition and colour in my own photographic work.

Photographing the kitchen...

Last week I took a break from the studio to return home and photograph a day in a working kitchen. This is for a self motivated project that involves the development of a cookbook.

I wanted the images to show the processes used within the kitchen, not just present the finished article to the reader. So after photographing the team at work, I visited to the grocers, fishmongers and butchers to take a few pictures of where the produce came from, I feel that these are some of the most effective images from the day.

I am really looking forward to returning to the kitchen at Whites next week to re-shoot.
